Program Purpose

The recreation therapy program at the USVNH is an crucial element of the lives of residents. Your role as a volunteer impacts the lives of the veterans who live here.

WHAT IS RECREATION THERAPY?
  • It is a holistic process that employs recreation and leisure activities to increase one's quality of life emotionally, mentally, physically, spiritually, and socially.
WHY DO WE DO IT? 
  • Research shows that recreation therapy can improve behaviors and moods and help retain mental abilities in dementia and Alzheimer's disease
  • Physical activity and socialization help older adults maintain and even improve function, prevent disability, help maintain physical, emotional and mental health.
  • Even just talking to residents about their lives (a technique known as reminiscence therapy) has been shown to decrease depression and agitation, improve cognitive measures improved self-esteem and life satisfaction.
